Curry May Ward Off Dementia

According to an article published on the BBC website, weekly helpings of curry may fight off dementia.

The article states:

"According to Professor Murali Doraiswamy of Duke University, 'If you have a good diet and take plenty of exercise, eating curry regularly could help prevent dementia.'"

This is excellent news for those who LOVE Thai dishes that contain curry! Bangkok Thai Restaurant serves several curry dishes, including Pad Prig Khing, Gang Dang, and Gang Keow Wan.

For more information about curry and the associate health benefits, you can read the entire BBC article by visiting http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8080630.stm.

We're OPEN!

After a brief vacation, Bangkok Thai Restaurant has reopened today, April 20th, and will be serving lunch and dinner! Come in and see us...we know you've been craving your favorite Thai dish while we've been closed!

Adisak, Dewey and Ploy returned from a vacation in Thailand on Friday. Despite some political turmoil in Thailand, mostly centered in Bangkok, the Siripornsawan's had a relaxing trip and got lots of sun and ate delicious seafood.

This past weekend, Meow, Sal, Iggy, Ploy, Joy, Fabiola [sister of Sal and sister-in-law to Meow, Ploy and Joy] and two BTR VIP customers - Nicole and James - headed to Washington, DC for a whirlwind sightseeing trip. The group has realized that the vast majority of their time is spent eating or deciding where to eat next. They enjoyed delicious meals at Gaupo's, a really fun Mexican restaurant, and Cafe Deluxe, among other places. After a seven hour drive on Friday night, an entire day spent walking on Saturday and Sunday, and another long drive home on Sunday night, it is safe to say that the group is suffering from sleep deprivation and hunger pains today.

Come and see us this week - we'd love to have you. We've missed you! Remember, we also take orders to go - so give us a call and place an order for lunch or dinner!

Happy Earth Day on Wednesday - remember to think green!

T.G.I.F!

Hello again! Happy Friday - -> it's almost 5 o'clock, and you know what that means..it's officially the weekend!

(And BTR is open for dinner)

BTR NEWS

Bangkok Thai Restaurant will be closed from MONDAY, APRIL 6TH until SUNDAY, APRIL 19TH and will be open for business on MONDAY, APRIL 20TH.

Adisak, Dewey and the rest of the BTR staff need a well-deserved break! We apologize for the inconvenience.

In other news, Ploy (hostess with the most-ess and daughter of Adisak and Dewey) will be running in the Tipp Hill Shamrock Run tomorrow, March 7th, at 11 am! If you're in the area, come up to Tipp Hill and cheer for her! We suspect that Ploy may only be running so that she can take part in the "after party" at Coleman's, but this has not been confirmed.

Don't forget - our menu is accessible online via the big green MENU link on the top right side of our site.

We look forward to seeing you this weekend! Enjoy the warm temperatures!

Options

In light of the beginning of the Lenten season - and for our vegetarian friends - Bangkok Thai Restaurant wants to highlight our non-meat/non-poultry menu options.

REMINDER: You can always head on over to our menu to check out our full array of entrees and appetizers, with our without meat and poultry.

At Bangkok Thai Restaurant, our customers have several options when ordering their meal:

Appetizers: we offer vegetarian versions of spring rolls and egg rolls. If you do not specify vegetarian, both rolls are made with pork. The veggie version contains tofu.

Entrees: for those customers who do not eat meat or poultry, there is a choice between shrimp, scallops or squid (or a combination!). You can also have your entree served with tofu. Our menu also features specific seafood entrees, including:

Ga Tiem Prig Thai and Pad Galee: seafood stir fry with either white pepper sauce or yellow curry sauce.
Bangkok Fish: salmon or tilapia topped with red curry

Soups: our Tom Yum Soup can be served with shrimp (in lieu of chicken), as can our Tom Kha soup.

Salads: all 3 of our salad options - Tossed salad, Yum Yum and Yum Woonsen - can be served with shrimp.

If you are a vegetarian, please inform your server - we are happy to suggest additional and appropriate options for you.

Tofu

Many people are hesitant to try tofu - it looks a little strange, has an interesting texture, and even bounces a little when you poke it - but once you try it, you may actually enjoy it! Tofu, or soy bean curd, is made by coagulating soy milk into curds and then shaping these curds into small squares. Tofu is obviously rich in soy, has many antioxidants, no saturated fat, no cholesterol, and is high in iron and protein! Some types/brands of tofu are also rich in calcium. Tofu is often fried, and will develop a thin, crunchy "crust" as a result - but is still light and airy. During the cooking process, tofu takes on the taste of whatever it is being cooked with - so, for example, if you cook your tofu with garlic and soy sauce, that is what it will taste like! Because it is sort of "sponge-like" tofu absorbs the flavors of sauces and spices.

For first-time tofu eaters, ordering Pad Thai with chicken AND tofu is a good idea. If you like to tofu, next time, forgo the chicken. Tofu is a healthy and delicious option.

Remember, the weekend specials will be posted here tomorrow, so check back! We'd love to see you this weekend.

Enjoy the warmer temperatures today! Spring is just around the corner.

Pad Prig Pow

Pad Prig Pow (#28) on the Bangkok Thai Restaurant menu is a customer favorite. Served with your choice of chicken, (gai) pork, (moo) shrimp, (goong) squid, (bplaa) beef, (neuua) scallops, or tofu, (dtao huu) Pad Prig Pow is considered to be a rice dish, and also said to be quite healthy for you!

Pad Prig Pow consists of sauteed garlic, chili paste, bamboo shoots, green peppers, baby corn, and Thai sweet basil. It's served in a crock along with a side of aromatic jasmine rice.

The chili paste in Pad Prig Pow has a number of health benefits - dried chili peppers (the base of chili paste) contain Vitamin A, fiber, Vitamin C, Iron and Potassium. Chili's also contain capsaicin, which acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Capsaicin has also been said to suppress the onset of prostate cancer in men.

Next time you dine with us, why not try #28, Pad Prig Pow?

Pad Thai

You have probably heard of Pad Thai - it is perhaps the most well-known (and most loved!) Thai dish. It is also often the dish that is recommended to those having Thai cuisine for the very first time.

While people are always raving about how amazing Pad Thai is, many who have tried and love the dish cannot accurately describe the ingredients! In honor of Pad Thai, one of the most popular entrees at Bangkok Thai Restaurant, here is a "Pad Thai history lesson" for you.

Pad Thai

Pad Thai - or
ผัดไทย in Thai - is a traditional dish that includes stir-fried rice noodles, a choice of (typically) chicken, shrimp, tofu or pork, eggs, fish sauce, tamarind juice, red chili peppers, and bean sprouts. There are several variations on Pad Thai, of course. In Thailand, the Pad Thai is generally lighter and dryer than the Pad Thai served in other parts of the world, but at Bangkok Thai Restaurant, our Pad Thai is made just the way we'd make it if we were in Thailand! In fact, in Thailand, Pad Thai is sold on the streets by food vendors, and is one of the most popular street foods.

Preparation of Pad Thai involves soaking of the rice noodles, which is quite the process. Rice noodles should be moderately solid yet flex
ible, not soft, so it is often difficult to determine just how long to soak your rice noodles. Perfect rice noodles lead to a perfect Pad Thai, which is often served with a sprinkling of coarsely chopped peanuts and a lime.

Depending on how brave you are, Pad Thai - like all of Bangkok Thai Restaurant's menu items - can be ordered mild, medium, hot, or 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 star hot (you may want to ask your server if the chili's are especially hot on any given day before ordering!)

Remember, in addition to our famous Pad Thai, we have a full menu with incredible Thai entrees. Whether you prefer rice dishes or noodle dishes, there's something for everyone at Bangkok Thai Restaurant. You can click the link to our Menu on the lower right-hand side of the website, OR you can click the big green MENU at the top of the page.

We're looking forward to dining with you this week!

Is Thai Food Healthy?

We're a health-conscious society. We count calories, control portions, measure servings, read labels, peel off the skin, etc. etc. Often, when we take the opportunity to dine at our favorite restaurant we think, "I'm going to let loose!" and you give yourself permission to order whatever you'd like. And you should! There's nothing wrong with indulging once and awhile. Especially when you come to Bangkok Thai Restaurant!

The question is, how healthy is Thai food?

According to thaifood.about.com (and from what Meow, Ploy and Joy have told us!) Thai cuisine is among the most healthy types of cuisine you can eat!

What good news!

The website goes on to hail the benefits of the fresh and healthy herbs and spices used in traditional Thai cooking, including lemongrass, tamarind, turmeric, galangal, and chilies.

In fact, turmeric is said to be an anti-inflammatory that may ease the discomfort of arthritis, and allergies! It is also considered to be an anti-oxidant that can help the body ward off disease. In laboratory studies, turmeric has also been known to help fight off breast and skin cancer!

Galangal (a cousin of ginger) is a powerful digestion aid. Actually, it's more than that - according to St. Hildegard of Bingen, a famous Herbalist (1098-1179), galangal could treat just about anything that ailed you, from indigestion to heart disease!

A more well-known ingredient, lemongrass, is widely used in Thai cuisine. It's a staple in Tom Yum Soup (featured on the BTR menu!) and is hailed as a cold and flu remedy.

Coconut milk, which gets a bad rap, is also said to be good for you. In fact, it lowers bad cholesterol, known as LDL, and promotes healthy cholesterol levels. It also boosts immunity, and may even fight aging! Who knew?

Of course, jasmine rice (in moderation) is also very healthy, as are spring rolls (non-fried) and the majority of Thai noodle dishes. It's nice to know that you can really feel good about eating the Thai food that you love, isn't it?

So, the next time you're thinking of dining out, consider Bangkok Thai Restaurant - not only will you be enjoying a tasty and unique meal, but you'll also be doing something good for your body!

It's almost the WEEKEND!

Got plans for the upcoming weekend yet? It not, give us a call and schedule your reservation and join for us for a meal this weekend!

And to all those lovebirds, we're still accepting reservations for Valentine's Day!

Have a great week!

History Lesson

First and foremost - Happy Superbowl Sunday! Bankgkok Thai Restaurant is closed on Sundays, but our favorite pizzeria, Sal's, is OPEN! Sal's is located in the heart of Baldwinsville and offers arguably the best chicken wings, pizza and chicken riggies in the area. Perfect Superbowl Sunday food!

It's not too late to order your Superbowl party munchies - give Sal's a call at 638-8505.

(Why are we shamelessly plugging Sal's Pizzeria? Sal's is owned and operated by Sal Lomedico, husband of Meow (Siripornsawan) Lomedico and father of the infamous Iggy!)

On to the history lesson - -

Have you ever taken the time to read the paragrap
h on the cover of BTR's menus? Maybe not, and that's okay, because you're probably too eager to open up the menu and choose your entree! And for those who have, THANK YOU - the information on the menu is a very important part of the culture of Thailand.

The logo in the cover of our menus looks like this:

As noted on the front of our menu, this logo represents the Suphannahongse Grand Royal Barge, which was constructed during the reign of King Rama I around 1782. The barge features the figure of a golden swan carved and decorated on the bow of the barge. The ornate swan holds a crystal ball and tassel in its mouth and wears a garland around its neck. Its feathers are beautifully represented by gilded and mirrored ornamentation that appear to "flow" in the winds along the length of its carved body, all the way down to its tail. The barge was used in 1932 during the reign of King Rama VII to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Bangkok.

Here's another photo of the royal barge, circa 1865 (thanks Wikipedia):

Of course, you may still find what is offered INSIDE our menu to be more captivating, and we don't blame you.

We'll be featuring our menu here on our blog beginning today with our delicious appetizers!
